Case Study
Renovation type: Bathroom remodel
Location: Calwell, 2905 ACT
Project duration: 3 weeks
The Client:
We recently completed a bathroom renovation for a client in Calwell, a quiet suburb in Canberra. Their home is a single-storey property with a fairly standard main bathroom that just wasn’t working for them anymore. It felt outdated, lacked proper lighting, and didn’t have enough storage. They wanted to modernise the space and turn it into something more functional, stylish, and relaxing to use every day.
What They Were Looking For
The brief was pretty straightforward. They wanted a cleaner, more modern look, better lighting, and more usable storage. A floating double vanity was high on the wishlist, as well as a shower-over-bath layout that didn’t feel cramped or closed in. They also asked for some soft lighting features to create a bit of a spa-like feel at night. The plumbing layout was fine, so we were able to keep that in place and focus the budget on the finishes and features that really matter.
First Impressions and Planning
When we first walked through the space, we could see the bones were good. There was a lot of potential to open it up visually, even without changing the layout. We focused on materials and lighting to bring the space to life, while making sure it stayed practical for everyday use.
How the Renovation Unfolded
We started by stripping the bathroom back to a blank slate. That included removing the old bath, vanity, fittings, and all existing tiles. Once the area was prepped, we waterproofed everything and got started on the new design.
For the floor, we used large grey porcelain tiles. They’re hard-wearing, easy to clean, and give the room a contemporary feel. On the walls, we went with classic white subway tiles, paired with a darker grout to make the pattern stand out and give it that timeless edge.
We installed a new built-in bath with a square-set spout and handheld shower rail. A simple glass panel keeps the space open while still containing water during showers. Above the bath, we built a recessed niche with warm LED lighting — perfect for storing bottles, but it also adds a really nice ambience at night.
The floating double vanity is one of the main features. It has a clean timber-look finish, two basins, and loads of storage underneath. We also added under-cabinet lighting for a soft glow that’s great in the early morning or evening. Above it, a large mirrored cabinet gives the illusion of more space and adds even more storage.
The Details That Made the Difference
This wasn’t just about making it look good. We paid close attention to things like drainage and lighting placement to make sure it’s practical too. The niche lighting is low-voltage and waterproof. The layout of the tiles was carefully planned to line up with fittings. And the vanity lighting avoids harsh shadows on your face — which is something people really appreciate once they start using the space.

Client Feedback
They were over the moon with the result. The room feels brighter, more spacious, and much more modern. They loved the LED features, and how the room now has different lighting options depending on the time of day. It’s gone from feeling like a basic bathroom to something you’d expect in a boutique hotel.
Timeline
From demolition to final clean-up, the whole project took just under three weeks. Everything ran on schedule, and the client was kept in the loop the entire way through.
Wrapping Up
This Calwell bathroom is a great example of how smart design and attention to detail can completely transform a space. By keeping the layout simple and investing in quality materials, we were able to create a bathroom that’s easy to use, easy to maintain, and a pleasure to be in.
